Washington, D.C., USA - Vice-president Kamala Harris has called Donald Trump, the president-elect of the United States (US), to concede the 2024 election.
As reported by CNN on Wednesday evening, November 6, Harris congratulated Trump on his win.
A senior adviser to Harris said she talked about "the importance of a peaceful transfer of power" and "being a president for all Americans".
Harris ran as the Democratic candidate for the White House after President Joe Biden left the race amid concerns about his advanced age following his disastrous debate with Trump in June.
As the vice president, she is expected to oversee the US Congress' ceremonial certification of the just-concluded election.
Trump won a decisive victory - comfortably clearing the 270 electoral college votes needed to clinch the presidency.
US election: Harris gives speech
Meanwhile, Harris gave her concession speech, formally ending her campaign and bowing out of the presidential race, CBS News noted.
She said:
“Hear me when I say: The light of America's promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting."
Harris - who smiled and waved as she entered the stage - acknowledged her supporters were feeling a "range of emotions".
She thanked President Biden for his support - as well as her running mate Tim Walz.
Lessons from US – Analyst Bolaji
Commenting on the US election, Femi Bolaji, a social-political commentator, listed lessons that Nigeria should learn from the just-concluded presidential election in the United States.
Bolaji appraised the poll after Trump's triumph.
He told Legit.ng:
"The recent U.S. election has once again shown the essence of a true democracy and how much the voice of the people matters.
"Moreover, the seamless election process should serve as a lesson for our electoral body as we approach the 2027 general election.
"Our hope is that Nigeria, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in particular, can learn from this example, studying the American model to see if we can adopt any strategies that might improve our electoral outcomes, free from opposition speculations.
"We must also work to redeem our national image and restore public trust, with INEC leading the way by ensuring free, credible, and transparent elections moving forward.
"To the political class, the outcome of the U.S election serves as a reminder that the people are more aware than ever and will vote for leaders who genuinely strive to improve their lives."
