Brooklyn Park, MN — Democrat, Huldah Hiltsley, has become Minnesota’s first state legislator of Kenyan heritage.
She made history by defeating Republican candidate Brad Olson in the race for Minnesota House District 38A.
What margin did Huldah win by?
Reflecting on the significance of the moment, she added that it was time for the work to start.
The Sahan Journal reports that Hiltsley won decisively, securing 65% of the vote compared to Olson's 35%.
“I am excited, I cannot believe it—it is history in the making. We worked so hard to get to this point,” Hiltsley said.
She added that her plan was to create a district that uplifts everybody and feels like home.
What Huldah's win means to supporters
Her supporters applauded at her watch party in Brooklyn Park as the results came Tuesday night, celebrating her groundbreaking victory.
Among those celebrating was 28-year-old marketing and biological science student Monni Nyaribo, who shares Hiltsley’s Kenyan heritage.
“She is working on inclusivity and building a strong community because within the African community, everything is done together,” Nyaribo said.
Who is Huldah Momanyi Hiltsley?
Huldah, a daughter of Philip and Tabitha Momanyi, was born in Nyamira county in 1985.
The family relocated to the US in 1994 where she attained a Master’s degree from Bethel University.
She currently holds three Bachelor’s degrees from the same institution in international business, international relations, and reconciliation studies.
Huldah is married to an American man named Bart Hiltsley.
Political history of Minnesota's District 38A
District 38A is known for its diversity. US Census Bureau estimates show that 33% of the population is Black, 18% Asian, 9% Hispanic, and 38% white.
Its demographic has shifted significantly since a 2020 redistricting, transforming it from Republican to Democratic.
For Hiltsley, the victory represents personal achievement and a step forward for representation and community unity in District 38A.
“We have an opportunity here to build bridges and foster a community that celebrates everyone’s heritage and potential,” she said.
Has Donald Trump won US election?
Meanwhile, former US president Donald Trump has won the 2024 election to make his comeback to the White House.
Trump defeated Kamala Harris in some key states, including Texas and Florida, gaining a lead over the Democratic candidate.
In his victory speech, Trump described the win as a historic moment, given the Republican candidate is also set to win in the popular votes.
