White House, United States - Kamala Harris, the vice president of the United States of America, has become the first woman to hold presidential power in the country.

CNN reported that President Joe Biden on Friday, November 19, temporarily transferred power to Harris while he underwent a medical checkup.

Legit.ng gathers that Biden was under anesthesia for a routine colonoscopy for one hour and 25 minutes.

Harris who is also America's first female, first Black and first South Asian vice president worked from her office in the West Wing while Biden was under anesthesia.

President Biden, who will turn 79 on Saturday, November 20, arrived Friday morning at Walter Reed Medical Center to undergo his first routine annual physical since taking office.

It was gathered that it is a routine for a US vice president to assume presidential powers while the president undergoes a medical procedure that requires anesthesia.

Biden sent letter on transfer of power to House of Representatives

Before going for the medical checkup, President Biden sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other relevant authorities to officially transfer the presidential powers to Harris.

The letter reads partly:

"Today I will undergo a routine medical procedure requiring sedation.
"In view of present circumstances, I have determined to transfer temporarily the powers and duties of the office of President of the United States to the Vice President during the brief period of the procedure and recovery."

In other news, Legit.ng previously reported that President Biden warmed hearts on social media after visiting Vice President Harris with gifts on her birthday.

In the video that was shared on Instagram by the US president, he was seen walking to the woman's office with a frame and bouquet of flowers.

Vice President Harris was excited as soon as President Biden entered her office with the gifts. She expressed gratitude to him and said the photo of them in the frame is her favourite.
