Background

Zamfara state is located in the northwestern region of Nigeria. It is bordered by the Republic of the Niger to the north, Kaduna State to the south, Katsina State to the east, and the states of Sokoto, Kebbi and Niger to the west. The state was formed on October 1, 1996, when it was split from Sokoto state.

Population

With a population of 3,278,873 as of 2006 census, Zamfara is the 11th most populous state in Nigeria.
