Background
Lagos State is located in the southwestern region of Nigeria. It is bordered by the state of Ogun to the northeast, by the Bight of Benin to the south, and by the Republic of Benin to the west. The state was formed on May 27, 1967, when it was split from the former Western Region.

With a population of over 9 million people as of 2006, Lagos is the most populous state in Nigeria.
