Rico Lewis: Why Man City Star Was Shown a Red Card Against Crystal Palace

  • Rico Lewis was sent off rather controversially during Manchester City's game against Crystal Palace on Saturday
  • The defender had earlier drawn Pep Guardiola's side level before he was red-carded for a second bookable offence
  • He will now miss the Manchester derby next weekend as Guardiola's uncharacteristic sticky run of form continues

Manchester City's form dipped just days after they won their first game in eight attempts.

Crystal Palace held the champions to a two-all draw on Saturday, on a weekend when most Premier League games were affected by inclement weather conditions.

Daniel Munoz opened the scoring after four minutes, but Erling Haaland equalised in the 30th minute with his first Premier League goal in four games.

Pep Guardiola's team was pegged back again after the break as Maxence Lacroix scored his first goal for the Seagulls. The lead, however, was short-lived as Rico Lewis answered with his first goal of the season.

Why Rico Lewis was red-carded vs Crystal Palace

Aside from City losing points once more, the other main talking point of the game was Lewis' red card. The England international was dismissed for a second bookable offence after being found to have trodden on Trevoh Chalobah.

Replays, however, reveal that it was the opposite way around. Both players battled the ball, but Chalobah benefited from referee Rob Jones' decision because Lewis went into the challenge with his studs showing.

Why VAR didn't review Rico Lewis' red card

Lewis didn't get any reprieve from VAR since it was a second yellow card rather than a direct red card. Second cautions are not within the purview of VAR review.

While talking on talkSPORT, former Premier League player Jason Cundy said,

"I'm not having it. I'll tell you what, if football really wants to move down the track of improving VAR - this has bugged me for a while - a second yellow card for a red, why it cannot be looked at by VAR?"

How many games will Rico Lewis miss?

The 20-year-old will be suspended for one game, which will be costly for Guardiola. The defender will be unavailable for next week's Manchester derby.

The draw leaves City in fourth, eight points adrift leaders Liverpool, who now have a game in hand following the postponement of the Merseyside derby.

When Guardiola almost attacked fan

Legit.ng had earlier reported that Guardiola almost lost his cool after a fan had accustomed him following one of Manchester City's recent defeats.

The Man City boss was captured in a viral video almost attacking a fan who had exchanged words with him while he was walking with his son in Manchester.
