Who is David Coote?

The 42-year-old has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation. He has been a Premier League referee since 2018. Before that, he was a referee in the Championship for eight years, as captured by the Mirror.

Coote had a number of run-ins with Klopp. He was the VAR when Martin Odegaard handled the ball during Liverpool's game against Arsenal in December last year. Referee Chris Kavanagh did not give it on the pitch, with Coote agreeing with the decision, much to the frustration of Klopp.

He was in charge of Liverpool's 2-0 win over Aston Villa this weekend, which saw Arne Slot's side open a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.
