Adesanya wins bet on NPFL match

UFC fighter Adesanya has taken a huge step in promoting the Nigerian league after placing a huge bet on an NPFL game later today in Aba.

Adesanya shared his ticket on his official X account, placing a bet of $4,000 (₦6.3 million) on Enyimba to defeat Lobi Stars and expecting to recoup $5,920 (₦9.3 million).

He won the bet after Enyimba defeated Lobi Stars 201 with two first-half goals from Chinedu Chukwu Ufere and Eze Ekwutoziam.

The league has battled with myriads of issues in the past, one of which is local involvement and visibility, which includes having the matches on TV and social media publicity.

Nigerian photojournalist and NPFL expert Michael Adegbile spoke exclusively to Legit.ng on how Adesanya’s action could help the league’s image and marketing.

“Celebrities betting on Sports fixtures are becoming a trend in recent times, so it is not surprising to see Israel Adesanya hopping on the trend. Israel Adesanya is a Brand ambassador of betting company Stake who are also front shirt sponsors of Enyimba in the NPFL,” he said.
“Having a front shirt sponsor as big as Stake is already a marketing edge for Enyimba and the league, but also having a celebrity with so much following and influence demonstrates his interest does well for the image of the league, as we’re assured of the numbers to follow that game.”
“However, it is left for the body in charge of the league to leverage this influence, put these sorts of games on TV and give people easy access to follow the league, that truly will be the real win for the country’s premier football league,” he concluded.
