“They Don’t Want to Beat Us”: When Rodri Taunted Arsenal After Man City’s PL Triumph
- Manchester City star Rodri taunted Arsenal last season after they lifted their fourth straight Premier League title
- The Spanish midfielder claimed the Gunners were playing for a draw when they met at the Etihad and drew 0-0
- The two Premier League contenders clash on Sunday at the Etihad, with Man City looking for a fifth straight win in the league
Manchester City welcome Arsenal this Sunday in their first Premier League clash this season.
Last season, Arsenal took four points from Man City but fell short in the league title as Pep Guardiola's side stormed to their fourth straight league title.
After winning their fourth league title in a row, Man City star Rodri controversially claimed that Arsenal were not looking for a win.
Man City won their 2023/24 Premier League title by two points over Arsenal, who slipped up late in the campaign at home to Aston Villa.
The clash at the Etihad on March 31 was dubbed a title decider. Arsenal approached the game with a defensive setup and got a point. Rodri was not impressed with the Gunners' approach.
“When they came here, they faced us at the Etihad, I saw them and said ‘Ah, these guys, they don't want to beat us, they just want a draw,’” Rodri said in May. “And that mentality, I don't think we would do it the same way. And we caught them [in the title race].”
Arsenal have not won a league game away at Man City since 2015. In that span, Man City have won seven and drawn two games, per Opta Analyst.
Both sides are unbeaten in the 2024/25 season, and Sunday's clash could be important at the end of the season.
