Henry Makinwa shares his desire
In an interview with Sports Brief, the 46-year-old, who has been vocal about coaching the national team, declared his personal goal and player preference for the Super Eagles.
when quizzed about what would be his personal target with the Nigerian team if given the job as coach, the former Vandrezzer FC manager stated:
"Of course, my target will be the choice of players, which is the most important thing. Every coach has a particular way they want to play. We have thousands of qualified Nigerians across the globe who are hungry and want to feature for the Super Eagles.
It will be a total shake-up of the Super Eagles squad. If you noticed, at the 2023 AFCON, we didn’t play the flamboyant football Nigeria is known for.
I will choose players based on merit, get the best players across the globe, merge them together, and get the best out of them."
Further quizzed about any particular player he would be looking to invite as an addition to the current crop of Super Eagles players, the former Gil Vicente star continued:
"There are a lot of players, but I will not mention names out of respect for other players. It doesn't mean we are keen on changing every player. The first step will be to meet with the current players of the Super Eagles and detail our plans to them to see if they can carry it out. If they cannot, then we can work towards switching them. There is a player, Olawoyin [Ibrahim], who scores very well in Turkey. Why is he not in the Super Eagles?
What we will do is to improve the scouting of players across Europe and get the best legs for the Nigerian team. I pray the NFF grants me the job as coach of the team; I would so much love it."
The optimistic words of the Super Eagles coaching aspirant undoubtedly appear enticing. However, it must be stressed that the decision lies with the NFF technical committee to appoint the person they deem fitting to lead the national team.
Dutch coach favourite for Super Eagles job
Sports Brief in another report stated that Dutch coach, Danny Buijs, is the perceived favourite to land the Super Eagles role.
The 41-year-old is the current manager of Eredivisie side, Fortuna Sittard.
