The group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has officially concluded, and the competition is currently on a two-day break before the knockout phase fixtures resume.

The group stages were undeniably captivating, featuring a series of unexpected twists and eventful football matches. Several tournament favourites faced elimination, while some underdog teams surprised many with their outstanding performances.

Notably, the Ghanaian national team, led by veteran manager Chris Hughton, was among those that underperformed in the showcase.

The Black Stars failed to meet the high expectations set for them, mirroring their disappointing campaign from 2022. Despite the projections, the West African giants were unable to secure a victory in any of the three games they participated in, leading to their elimination from the tournament.

This lacklustre performance has prompted fans and stakeholders to express their opinions on the Black Stars' campaign at the AFCON.

Referee. Daniel Laryea, a Ghanaian official, has also shared his thoughts on the team's performance, making it clear where he stands on the matter.

Referee Laryea on Ghana’s AFCON outing

In a conversation with Sports Brief, the 36-year-old CAF licensed referee shared his perspective on his country's AFCON campaign.

When asked if Ghana's exit from the AFCON saddened him, he responded:

"Though I am Ghanaian, of course, we want the best. We are the majority of the team, and we aspire to go far. However, other teams prepared very well for the competition, and they are still here.
Well, for me, it was disheartening, but we are here, and I have to focus on my job as a referee."

The sentiments expressed by the 36-year-old seem to echo the feelings of many Ghanaians as they strive to move past the disappointments of the AFCON and concentrate on the team's future.

In an effort to overcome their AFCON setbacks, the Ghanaian FA has already proposed a friendly match with the Argentine National team scheduled for the next international window.

Ghana journalist slams Black Stars

Sports Brief in another report stated that a Ghanaian journalist has voiced his frustration with the Black Stars after their elimination from the AFCON.

Well-known football expert Nuhu Adams didn't mince his words when discussing Chris Hughton's team, and he was captured on camera expressing his dissatisfaction with what he perceived as a disappointing performance on the night.
