Henry Makinwa: Spain Based Gaffer Details What He Would Do Differently if Appointed Coach of Nigeria

The Super Eagles coaching vacancy continues to generate significant conversations across the Nigerian footballing communities.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finalist remains without a head coach since the departure of Jose Peseiro.

The Nigerian team had to propagate the March international fixtures under the guidance of interim coach, Finidi George, and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is keen to ensure the Super Eagles have a permanent coach ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series in June.

A plethora of managers have expressed their interest and submitted applications to become the next coach of the Super Eagles.

However, as the NFF continues to scrutinise the received applications, some of these managers have shared their plans for the national team in an effort to bolster their candidacy, and the latest to do so is Spain-based coach, Henry Makinwa.

The 46-year-old emphasised why he is the right person to lead the Super Eagles and outlined how he aims to achieve success with the national team.

Makinwa speaks on Super Eagles' role

In an interview with Sports Brief, the former Vandrezzer FC boss expressed his ambition to lead the Super Eagles.

Explaining why he considers himself the right person for the job, he stated,

"I am a Nigerian, and I meet all the qualifications specified by the NFF; I check all the boxes."

When asked about the approach he hopes to instil compared to previous Super Eagles coaches, the 46-year-old said,

"I will select players based on merit, both foreign-based and from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). Additionally, I will focus on creating a distinct playing style for the Super Eagles."

The confident remarks of the manager, who only recently updated his coaching badges, serve as a rallying call for the NFF technical committee to conduct a fair and thorough screening process for all candidates vying for the Super Eagles coaching position.

While the 46-year-old remains optimistic about his aspirations, the responsibility lies with the NFF technical committee to appoint a manager they believe is best suited for the Super Eagles.

Guardiola’s assistant favourite for Nigeria's coaching role

Sports Brief in another report stated Pep Guardiola's longest-serving ally, Domenec Torrent, is the favourite to be named Nigeria's next manager.

The 61-year-old is said to have been selected by the football federation over Conceicao and other candidates competing for the role. Torrent most recently managed Turkish club, Galatasaray.
