Cavin Johnson: Interim Kaizer Chiefs Coach Speaks About the Honour of Leading the Amakhosi

Cavin Johnson has stepped up when called upon.

The 64-year-old had barely settled into his position as Head of Academy when the phone rang to announce an unexpected promotion.

Johnson must now steady the ship by pacifying the fans and getting the Chiefs players to find a common desire.

Johnson inherits a team sitting eighth on the log and who have been eliminated from two domestic cups.

On the positive side, Johnson will have no distractions as he looks to iron out any unwanted kinks. His first test will be against Golden Arrows on Saturday, but all Chiefs coaches are measured by their performance in the derby.

Kaizer Chiefs welcome Orlando Pirates to the FNB Stadium on November 11 and aside from this weekend's trip to Hammersdale, they will have Cape Town Spurs on November 8 to fine-tune their approach.

Speaking to KaizerChiefs.com, Johnson said:

"Firstly, I would like to thank the Chairman, Dr. Kaizer Motaung, for seeing enough in me to have the faith to put me in charge of Kaizer Chiefs. To be given the opportunity to coach Amakhosi, one of the world’s great footballing institutions, is a great honour for me."

Believing Chiefs' problems run deeper, former striker, Shane McGregor advised the Amakhosi leadership to modernise their recruitment policy, while being introspective about their problems.

Speaking to TimesLive, the 1989 NSL Player of the Year said:

“Any decent coach is going to come with his own people. It is as simple as that. You look anywhere in the world, that's what happens.

“They must start to identify where the problem is and where it is going wrong, a total outlook at the whole club."

Another former glamour boy speaks

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Siphelele Mthembu is comparing Johnson to Pitso Mosimane.

Mthembu, who played under Johnson at Platinum Stars, believes Chiefs' new interim coach can lead them to success.

All are expecting a positive reaction from Chiefs players to find a winning result to herald the start of a new era.
