The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU), currently fighting Banyana’s cause, are engaging with Gaunter Premier Panyaza Lesufi and SAFA President Danny Jordaan to try and rectify the issue.

Thulaganyo Gaoshubelwe, president of SAFPU, has accused SAFA of bullying the side after the governing body sent the team home before the game.

Why Banyana boycotted the fixture?

As noted by Far Post, Banyana asked SAFA to change the venue of their final fixture as they feared for their safety playing at the Tsakane Stadium.

The venue has been closed as it was deemed unsuitable for football games. Another source of contention is the money due to the side competing in the World Cup.

FIFA has set aside a remuneration guarantee for each player featuring at the tournament, something Banyana want to be written into their contracts so they are guaranteed the money. Jordaan is alleged to be refusing to do so.

Jordaan also promised to address the side regarding the issues over the weekend, but never pitched for the meeting.

With the side scheduled to depart for the World Cup on July 5, no one knows whether the team selected by Desiree Ellis will be heading to the tournament in New Zealand and Australia.

The side assembled by SAFA were eventually beaten 5-0 by Botswana.

Banyana sent home by SAFA

The South African Football Association sent the women’s national team home after refusing to play their send-off match ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

The players threatened to boycott the game because of the condition of the pitch at the stadium, wanting a more suitable venue for their final fixture.
