Roy Keane's tackle on Alfie in 2001 is considered one of the worst challenges in Premier League history. The former Manchester United skipper tackled the City midfielder, who suffered a severe injury to his left knee. The injury ended Alfie's Man City career.

It is believed that Keane's move was an act of vengeance on a previous Alfie Haaland tackle in 1997. Keane ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament after tripping up following a coming together with Alfie when Leeds was playing Man United.

"I'd played against Haaland three or four times between the game against Leeds, in 1997, when I injured my cruciate and the game when I tackled him, in 2001, when he was playing for Manchester City. If I'd been this madman out for revenge, why would I have waited years for an opportunity to injure him?" Keane said.

The former Man City midfielder spent eight years without playing football while trying to recover to return to football. He returned in 2011 and played only one game for Bryne FK 3 before moving to Roseland Ballklubb. He made six league appearances for the club and scored one goal between 2011-2013.

"If you're on the ground and someone hits you in the right leg, you can still twist your other leg. It can get injured, and that's probably what happened. Obviously, I found out afterwards that it was with intent, and he was seeking revenge and all these things. I think that's a bit sad. Sad for football, and it was not good for me either at the time." Alfie Haaland opened up on the incident.

International career

Alfie represented his country Norway at the Under-17 and Under-21 levels in the early 1990s. He played for the senior national team from 1994 to 2001, making 34 appearances.
