The 2024 Copa America final may have ended with a big grin on Lionel Messi's face, but it wasn't all smiles for the mercurial Argentine.

The 37-year-old picked up an injury in the 36th minute and had to be replaced by Nico Gonzalez in the 66th minute.

The right ankle injury, which would eventually reduce the Inter Miami captain to tears, appeared to worsen as time passed.

Messi would eventually find some solace when Inter forward, Lautaro Martinez, scored in extra time, ensuring a successful defence of their Copa America title.

However, amid Argentina’s title celebrations, Messi's noticeably swollen ankle continues to spark reactions, with many taking to social media to air their thoughts.

@Mohamedfaye20, unable to believe his eyes, commented:

"Omg Messi."

@just1nvest expressed his thoughts, stating:

"OUCH! Easy to see why he had to come off."

@FootballForeca3, in disbelief, posted:

"Was that from this injury or is it swelling because Messi is playing through injury this tournament?"

@Yovssovph, commenting on the tournament's tough nature, remarked:

"Copa America is just like a waaaaaar."

@Blacksodje also weighed in on the brutal competition in the Copa America tournament, saying:

Messi ended the tournament unable to wear his right boot due to the unusual swelling. However, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner will find solace in the fact that his team secured another Copa America title.

The Argentina skipper was overwhelmed with emotion as he left the pitch in tears, with Nico Gonzalez taking his place on the pitch in the second half.
