The north Londoners have not had a very rosy season, especially in the domestic scene as they currently sit tenth on the log with just 42 points from 30 rounds of matches.

The side suffered an embarrassing 3-0 defeat in the hands of Liverpool at the weekend, with the result denting their hopes of playing in Europe next season.

Carragher, however, believes Arteta is the right man for the Arsenal job and should be afforded time to assemble his preferred team that can competitively challenge for titles.

The Liverpool icon further suggested the Arsenal boss needs to be allowed the chance to trim his current squad and ship out deadwood players.

"It’s going to take a lot of pain for Arsenal. It’s the players, get rid of them. Stick with Arteta and get the young players in the team."

The former England international went on to list some of the stars he believes should be let go, including summer signing Willian.

He also included record signing Nicolas Pepe in the list and French striker Alexander Lacazette.

"Has [Alexandre] Lacazette ever really been the answer? No. Willian has been a disaster of a signing," the retired defender noted.

"Nicolas Pepe, it’s not his age or his price tag, really, he’s just not good enough and never will be good enough, so Arsenal need to cut their losses there."

Carragher went on to question Gunners captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's work ethic especially since signing a new long-term contract at the Emirates last summer.

"With Aubameyang, he’s the superstar, but I think his performances this season have been lazy, at times."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Mikel Arteta has said he is taking the blame for his side's fell to a 3-0 disappointing defeat to Liverpool at the Emirates on the evening of Saturday, April 3.

The north Londoners were without a host of key players for this particular clash, with Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, David Luiz and Granit Xhaka all missing.

However, rather than attribute his side's defeat to the absence of the four important squad members, Arteta has said he is to blame for the weekend result.
