Super Eagles Legend Taribo West Discloses How he Almost Joined Liverpool from Milan, Gives Stunning Reason

Former Super Eagles defender Taribo West has explained how he almost left Italian giants AC Milan for a move to Premier League side Liverpool because of the mafias.

During his active playing time for clubs and country, Taribo West was known as one of the best defenders in the world considering his styles of play.

Taribo West actually started his football career in the Nigerian Professional League before moving to Europe in 1993 where he joined Auxerre.

His performances in the French Ligue One helped him to secure a move to Inter Milan where he the UEFA Cup and played alongside the likes of Ronaldo, Diego Simeone and Javier Zanetti.

After 44 games for Inter Milan, Taribo West joined Milan, but he did not enjoin regular playing time there due to the reason he explained below according to the report on Daily Star.

"The Mafia would do anything in their powers to make sure I was done away with at Milan.
"They cooked a vicious story in the press that I was injured in the desperate bid to send me out of Milan. The doctors were bribed to say I was injured, but it was a lie.
"They did that because they felt it was unthinkable for an African player to take the place of those three ageing defenders [Franco Baresi, Alessandro Costacurta and Paolo Maldini].
"Liverpool came with an offer, but at the end of the day I had to settle for Derby County."

Between 1994 and 2005, Taribo West played 42 games for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu explained how his mistake made Nigeria to lose against Senegal at the 2002 African Cup of Nations which was a painful defeat.

Super Eagles stars were in good form at the 2002 African Cup of Nations and Nigerians were expecting the team to win the championship.

Their semifinal game against Senegal in Mali was a tough one as Ifeanyi Udeze and Julius Aghahowa were red carded in the 2-1 defeat for the Super Eagles.

In the quarterfinal, Ike Shorunmu suffered an head injury against Ghana and was rushed to the hospital.
