Despite missing a glorious chance to put the game to bed late on in the second half, Martial staged a Man-of-the-match performance to help Man United beat their arch-rivals 2-0 at Etihad Stadium.

Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw were both on target during the thrilling clash, with the win effectively ending City's 21-game unbeaten streak.

In the run up to the tie, the Citizens had not lost a single match across competitions, tracing their last defeat to November 2020 in the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.

However, coming off a disappointing draw against Crystal Palace in midweek, United took full advantage of their chances to break a City side who have been dominant for weeks.

The epic win notwithstanding, it was an incident involving Martial with a host of City players attempting to stop him from scoring that stole the headlines.

The incident happened just seconds into the kickoff and a few moments before the Red Devils scored the opener.

In the viral photo, a record of six City players including John Stones and Joao Cancelo can be spotted tackling Martial who was through in goal.

Gabriel Jesus, who was part of the contingent tracking down the Frenchman eventually conceded a penalty after he tripped Martial.

Fernandes stepped up to convert the resulting spotkick before Shaw wrapped up business at Etihad in the 50th minute.

The incident caused a stir online, with one social media user claiming City "made Martial look like prime Messi."

A second added: "Martial having his best performance of the season and look like prime Maradona."

Another noted: "Only Maradona , Ronaldinho, Messi, Pele Ronaldo & C Ronaldo can create this Martial picture."

Reacting to Martial's performance, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer conceded the forward was easily the man of the match.

United's win mean they still have City in sight in the title race despite having 11 points separating them.
