FA Cup: Fans fume as referee appears to tackle Chelsea's Mason Mount vs Luton

Referee David Coote on Sunday, January 24, found himself on the receiving end after he appeared to tackle Mason Mount during Chelsea's FA Cup tie against Luton Town.

In a video capturing the incident, Mount was prepared to shoot through goal before Coote unwittingly brought him down.

Coote immediately blew the whistle and raised his hands in front of Mount as admission for his mistake.

Mount and his teammates seemed forgiving but social media was less so as the first half incident sparked anger and fury from a section of fans, with others making fun of it.

" David Coote isn’t a ref. Man is tackling Mount," on said.
"David Coote just flattened Mount, this guy isn’t a serious referee," a second pointed out.
"David Coote climbing the ranks of worst ref," a third fumed.

FA Cup's official Twitter handle, @EmiratesFACup, also satirized the whole episode, and even went a notch higher to tweet Coote's stats.

"Referee David Coote's first-half stats: Tackles made: 1 Tackles completed 1/1 (100%)," the account tweeted.

Fortunately for Chelsea, they went on to win the fourth round tie, with Tammy Abraham scoring a hat-trick to inspire his side to victory.

The Englishman broke the deadlock inside 11 minutes of gameplay before doubling the advantage six minutes later.

Luton, however, pulled one back via Jordan Clark on the half-hour mark before Abraham completed his hat-trick in the 74th minute to put the game beyond the Championship outfit.

The win was enough to earn the west Londoners a place in the fifth round of the competition where they will battle lower tier side Barnsley for a chance to reach the quarters.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Chelsea have reportedly identified Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers as a possible replacement for Frank Lampard should they decide to sack the Englishman.

Lampard is currently fighting to save his job at Stamford Bridge after leading the Blues to a disappointing string of poor performances.
