Liverpool star Georgino Wijnaldum has rejected a fresh contract from the reigning Premier League champions despite the club’s desperation to tie him down.
Reports have it that Barcelona are set to offer the midfielder a mouthwatering contract for him to move to the Catalan club.
Wijnaldum is in the final months of his contract and it was gathered that the player has rejected contract extension in his bid to move to Barca.
Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman is hoping to lure the 30-year-old on a free transfer as soon as the season ends as the tactician is a huge fan of the player having managed him in the Dutch national team.
The player’s contract is giving Liverpool concerns as the Reds want him to remain at the Catalan club for some more time.
He is a key player for Jurgen Klopp having played every single Premier League game for the champions this season.
But the club has failed to agree to terms with Wijnaldum throughout the season.
And their latest offer has also fallen short of the mark, with a move away now on the cards, according to Todofichajes via Mirror.
The report goes on to state that Wijnaldum does not want to be at Liverpool and wants the choice to be able to leave.
His heart is set on a move to Barcelona, who will be able to start negotiating with him on a pre-contract agreement.
Meanwhile, Spanish giants Barcelona have confirmed the exit of Carles Alena as the impressive midfielder joins local club Getafe on loan.
Alena’s exit is Barcelona’s first departure of the January 2021 transfer window as the 23-year-old will be on loan at the rival club until the end of the season.
He managed to play just five matches across all competitions for Barcelona this season so far, playing 170 minutes in total.
However, Legit.ng earlier reported that Liverpool were denied a chance to extend their lead on the Premier League table after kicking off the New Year with a 1-0 defeat to Southampton at St Mary's Stadium.
Danny Ings scored the only goal that separated the two sides just after two minutes and the guests could not reply.
The Reds had a potential penalty call but the referee decided to overlook their plea after Sadio Mane was said to have been fouled in the hosts' 18-yard box.
