Villa's first notable attack of the game came as McGinn side-footed a volley which was saved by De Gea
A delightful play again from United saw Rashford and Wan Bissaka interchange beautifully as Pogba dummies the final pass for Fred to shoot and it went just over the bar.
Fernandes also bent his effort but it went slightly off target as Villa survived another scare.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 40th minute from a swift counter-attacking move from United as Wan-Bissaka cross was met with a diving header from Martial to make it 1-0.
Villa got themselves back into the game as Traore was on hand to find time and space to score from Jack Grealish's low cross. 1-1 it was in the 58th minute.
Three minutes later, Fernandes restored the lead for United via a penalty after Pogba was fouled in the box.
The goalkeepers at both ends made fantastic saves, as well as a last-minute stoppage by Eric Bailly, kept the scoreline at 2-1.
