- Paul Onuachu got the credit for the goal after powering in a long range shot in the early seconds of the encounter

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has showered encomiums on his players following their slim victory over Egypt in an international friendly at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

An early goal from newly invited Paul Onuachu propelled Nigeria over their north African counterpart in the game.

Though, no trophy was at stake at the end of the match, both teams have their pride to protect as they have been rivals in continental football for a long time.

The victory came on the back of the Eagles 3-1 win over Seychelles in the final group game of the 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifiers at the same venue.

However, the German born tactician believes his players are about 70% ready for the competition, but insisted that they still have some corrections to make before the tourney.

"This was not a good match, it was a great match for us against one of the top favourites for the Africa Cup of Nations," Rohr told reporters after Tuesday’s game.

"We still have to improve, but we’re about 69-percent ready for the Africa Cup.”

Meanwhile, the three time AFCON kings are expected to play two more friendly matches before the competition kicks off in June.

And Katsina United goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa says beating Egypt in an inconsequential match has boosted their confidence heading into Egypt for this summer's tournament.

The former FC IfeanyiUbah goaltender also believes the Super Eagles are ready for the 24-nation championship this summer.

"We’re ready for the Africa Cup of Nations,” said goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa. “The win against Egypt has given us a lot of confidence leading up to the tournament.”

The Cup of Nations starts on June 21, with the draw yet to be held and the venues still to be announced after Cameroon was stripped of the hosting rights and replaced with Egypt.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Paul Onuachu's early strike powered Nigeria to a 1-0 win over Egypt in an international friendly clash.

It took the 24-year-old just about eight seconds in his first start for the Super Eagles to find the back of the net.

He was introduced as a substitute in Nigeria's 3-1 win over Seychelles in the last 2019 AFCON qualifying match in Asaba last weekend.
