- The 41-year-old believes China based Mikel Obi has what it takes to bring creativity to the three-time African Champions during their campaign this summer in Russia

- Nigeria are grouped alongside Argentina, Iceland, and Croatia for this summer's global championship

Ex Nigeria international Kanu Nwankwo says Tianjin TEDA star John Obi Mikel will give the Super Eagles the creativity they lack in the midfield when the World Cup kicks off this June.

The former Chelsea player was missing for the three-time African champions when they faced Poland and Serbia in last month’s international friendly games in Poland and London respectively.

However, with the global championship kicking off in about 60 days’ time, Kanu says the team has nothing to worry about as far as creative player is concerned.

Kanu said that Mikel Obi has shown he has the quality to handle the department without any pressure, making reference to the team’s unbeaten run in the qualifying process.

He further stated that all he needed was a little more support from the team, saying the China based player will surely deliver at the tournament.

“I believe we don’t really need to go too far for a solution for a player who can provide creativity to the team. Kanu told AOI football.

“I think a player like Mikel Obi can perfectly play in that position because he has shown in recent past that he can deliver when it matters most.

“Look at our qualifiers, especially against Cameroon and Algeria, he brought his attacking prowess to play and ensured the team was able to gain maximum points.

“I know a bit about him from our time with the national team; if given the right support from the back, he will definitely deliver upfront,” Kanu said.

Nigeria reach the 2018 FIFA World Cup this year ahead of the likes of Cameroon, Algeria, and Zambia in Group B.

Meanwhile, Kanu is one of the few Nigerian players to have won the UEFA Champions League while at Ajax Amsterdam.

Though, he didn’t win any African Cup of Nations, he was part of the team that won the 1996 Atlanta Olympic gold medal in the men’s football event.

He also won two Premier League titles among several other international cups during his playing career that last for about two decades.
