The referee for the bout, Hamad Hafaz Shouman from Egypt, had mistakenly raised Mayweather's hand while Todorov was announced the winner of the semi-final contest.
And while Mayweather's career after the unfortunate defeat ascended to the top, Todorov had no luck and his career went in a very different direction.
Following his victory over Mayweather, Todorov's career hit a snag heavily due to the absence of promised funds back in Eastern Europe in the 1990s.
He received a million dollar offer to represent Turkey at the 1997 World Championships after he was barred by Bulgaria.
Todorov could only manage a few professional fights before ending his career in 2003.
"I have suffered depression countless times, even now," Todorov said, quoted by Marca. I live a common life with my family."
After his dreams died, the boxer was offered a chance at drug trafficking by the mafia, which he turned down, continuing to rue the professional boxing career once on offer while witnessing Mayweather's rise to the top of global sport.
