Glasgow 2014 Is Just The Tip Of The Iceberg – Okagbare Thanks Fans

Nigeria's Golden runner, Blessing Okagbare, has said she is proud of her recent performance in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Okagbare had won the women’s 100m and 200m events, and a silver in the 4x100m and is only the fourth ever female to achieve such feats.

She did particularly well in the 100m, where she broke the games record with a time of –10.85– taking out the record set by Bahamian Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie in 2002, 10.91.

Blessing said: “The Commonwealth Games is now done and over with and it proved to be one of my best international showings ever. I came away with double gold and a silver medal''.

She thanked her fans for their prayers, she continued: “There are many more international competitions ahead for me in my career. And so as you come along this journey with me, I want to thank you all once again from the bottom of my heart for being there, and the great support you have all shown to me during the Games.

“You have all been awesome. God bless all of you and please keep me in your prayers as I continue with my career.”

Since failing to win a medal in the 2012 Olympic games, Okagbare came back in 2013 and set a new African record of 10.79 in the 100m race at last year’s London Anniversary Games, beating Gloria Alozie's time of 10.90 in 1998.

Nigeria has made a total of 13 appearances at the Commonwealth Games since 1930. The overall number of medals at nation’s account has now reached 212 (61 gold, 66 silver, 85 bronze).
