Team Nigeria Bring 36 Medals From Commonwealth Games
A thrilling 11-day major sporting event, Commonwealth Games, ended in Glasgow, Scotland, on August 3, 2014, Sunday. Team Nigeria brings home 11 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze medals (36 total). In terms of quantity, this is the best ever performance by the nation’s athletes.
The previous record was set in the 1994 games in Victoria, Canada. The team secured an impressive set of 11 gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze medals there.
This year’s result could have been even more impressive. However, the unfortunate disqualification of gold medallist in weightlifting, 16-year-old Chika Amalaha made ‘a minus one’ for Nigeria.

England is on top of the overall medal standings with 58 gold, 174 total. Australia and Canada occupy 2nd and 3rd position respectively, while the hosts, Scotland, get a surprising 4th place among all the Commonwealth nations.
Nigeria is #2 among all the African nations, behind South Africa (pos. 7, 13 gold, 40 total), but ahead of Kenya (10 gold, 25 total).
Team Nigeria was especially successful in weightlifting, athletics, wrestling event and powerlifting, while performance in boxing and table tennis were a bit below expectations.
Blessing Okagbare is Nigeria's athlete #1 at the just-concluded event, winning 2 gold, 1 silver (Athletics).
