Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has admitted the club is finding it “difficult” to recruit a new striker because their transfer targets are too expensive.
Since the departure of Sergio Aguero, who has since joined Barcelona on a free transfer, City have been linked with a number of top forwards including Harry Kane and Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.
They had a £100million bid for Harry Kane rejected while Borussia Dortmund’s valuation of Haaland also seemed to have repelled City from the talented Norwegian.
While speaking to Catalan network TV3 as per Daily Mail, the Spanish tactician said there was almost no chance of City signing an expensive striker because the club, despite having billionaire owners, was also negatively affected by COVID-19.
“At the prices (quoted) we are not going to buy any strikers. It is impossible, we cannot afford it,” Guardiola said.
“All clubs are struggling financially, we are not an exception. We have Gabriel (Jesus) and Ferran (Torres) who have been incredible in this position.
'We have young players in the academy and we play many times with a false nine. There is more of a chance we aren't going to buy a striker for next season,” he added.
Tottenham are determined to cling on to Harry Kane, a month after the England international dropped a bombshell that he was open to leaving the club.
Man City’s attacking options
At the moment City have at least two first XI players who can play as strikers.
Gabriel Jesus remains the most preferred option while Spaniard Ferran Torres can also play up front in the false-nine set up which is heavily preferred by Guardiola.
Haaland to Chelsea?
Elsewhere, there are strong suggestions that Chelsea are favorites to land Erling Haaland this summer.
Talks were opened between Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund, although the German club value the youngster at around £170m.
Legit.ng earlier reported that Chelsea are reportedly ready to offer German giants Borussia Dortmund massive £150m (around N85.3 billion) for the transfer of Erling Haaland to Stamford Bridge.
Last season, the Blues chiefs spent big on the transfer of players with the likes of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz costing them mega amount, but they gained something at the end of the season as they won the Champions League.
