The incident came amid a £500m redevelopment being undertaken at the facility.

According to Daily Mail, firefighters were called to the ground after a cloud of thick black smoke was sighted pumping out of the stadium.

The Madrid fire brigade is understood to have put out the fire just 15 minutes after they were called in.

Whereas the cause of the inferno remains unknown, Spanish outlet, Marca, reports the stadium's fire alarm went off and alerted the emergency response departments in time.

The fire incident took place nearly 24 months after construction works began to upgrade the facility.

The multi-million upgrade meant Real Madrid could not hold their home matches at the stadium this season.

They ultimately shifted base to the 6,000-seater Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, an arena ordinarily meant for the reserve team.

Santiago Bernabeu has played host to Real Madrid home matches since 1947.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Zinedine Zidane has stepped down as the head coach of Real Madrid for the second time after failing to help them win any title in the recently concluded season.

The Frenchman puts a dent on his records after failing to win any trophy for Los Blancos in the 2020-21 campaign - the first time they have won no trophy in over a decade.

This is however the reason the 48-year-old parted ways with the Spanish League giants.

Although Real fought till the very last matchday for the title, however, Atletico Madrid were the eventual champions after both clubs won their respective games.

Zidane had no problem leaving the Bernabeu outfit having being linked with a move away from them all through the season owing to their struggles in all competitions.

Apart from finishing second on the La Liga table, they were dumped out of the Champions League at the semifinal stage by Chelsea who progressed to the final on 3-1 aggregate.
