Manchester City star, Kevin de Bruyne has beaten Barcelona captain Lionel Messi to win the 2020 World’s Best Playmaker title organised by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).
In the 2020 edition of the award, Cristiano Ronaldo was not included in the top 9 as Messi who won the title in 2019 dropped to second position.
Messi has won the award for record-equalling four times but failed to grab it in 2020 as his form dropped drastically since the month he threatened to leave Barcelona.
IFFHS wrote on their website as cited in Soccer Laduma:
"Ranked in the Top 5 in the last years, he (De Bruyne) has won the IFFHS Award in 2020 due to his intelligence, his technical ability, his regularity and determination always in high performances with Manchester City and Belgium."
While Messi managed to garner 100 points, Man City’s De Bruyne got 175 points to emerge the winner of the 2020 edition.
For the year 2020, only nine players made the final list, with Cristiano Ronaldo, who was in the top 10 in the 2018 edition, once again not making the ranking.
9) Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City) – 5 points
8) Luka Modric (Real Madrid) – 5 points
7) Angel Di Maria (Paris Saint-Germain) – 5 points
6) Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) – 10 points
5) Alejandro Gomez (Atalanta) – 20 points
4) Thiago Alcantara (Bayern Munich) – 20 points
3) Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich) – 25 points
2) Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona) – 100 points
1) Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) – 175 points
