Bruno Fernandes: Neville compares midfielder to United flop Veron after Wolves draw
- Gary Neville believes Bruno Fernandes's debut for Man United bore flashes of Juan Sebastian Veron
- Veron, a United flop spent just two seasons at Od Trafford despite joining the Red Devils for a then British record fee from Lazio in 2001
- Fernandes sealed a move to Man United, making his debut just hours after the transfer in a goalless draw against Wolves
Man United legend Gary Neville has hailed Bruno Fernandes after the Portuguese's debut for the club against Wolves, but rather bizarrely compared the midfielder to infamous flop Juan Sebastian Veron.
Fernandes, who completed a January switch to Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon walked straight into the Red Devils' starting squad as the Manchester club hosted Wolves on Saturday, February 1.
The former Sporting skipper was drafted into an attacking role, before dropping deeper in the second half of the clash which finished in a goalless draw.
And Neville believes the move played in favour of Fernandes as it saw him make a good account of his debut.
"In the first half in the No.10 role, he reminded me a little bit of what Juan Sebastian Veron used to do when he came to United. He sort of charged around everywhere and moved everywhere and was busy and sort of looking for spaces but didn’t really play in a position," Neville told Sky Sports.
"I actually liked him more in the second half when he played with a little bit more control. But I think it was a decent debut from him," the Englishman continued.
Veron, a retired Argentine footballer spent just two seasons at Old Trafford, joining the club from Lazio in 2001 for then British record fee of around £28m.
His spell was punctuated with a dip in form and failure to adapt in the Premier League, leading to an onslaught from the media.
