Reps to Share Cars with 360 Members Amid Fuel Subsidy Removal Hardship

FCT, Abuja - Amid the pains that come with the removal of the fuel subsidy, the House of Representatives said it had concluded plans to share official vehicles for 360 members of the 10th National Assembly.

According to Daily Trust, Akin Rotimi, the chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, said the management was already working to procure and distribute the vehicles to members.

Rotimi stated that the Nigerian masses had been fed exaggerated stories from many online media, adding that the procurement of the operational vehicles was in line with existing protocols of the legislative arms.

Cars given to lawmakers are property of national assembly

According to the spokesperson of the House of Representatives, even non-elected officials in the executive arms have official vehicles attached to their office, and the public needs to be educated about the operations of the elected officers.

He said:

"The vehicles to be allocated to the offices of honourable members are utility operational vehicles tied to their oversight functions in the discharge of their duties in the standing committees. They are not personal vehicles gifted to honourable members."

The lawmaker further stressed that vehicles would remained the properties of the national assemblies and the members who got it would have to return it to the national assembly at the expiration of their tenure expect they pay for it.

However, it was not clear if national assembly members who have gotten the vehicles in the past have paid or return them.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the PDP in Plateau state has suffered a severe setback as one of its Senators and three of its House of Representatives.

Justice Mohammed Tukur-led three-man panel unanimously ruled that the lawmakers' nomination did not follow due processes.

Following the decision of the tribunal, two House of Reps candidates from the Labour Party and one from the APC became the beneficiaries, while former Governor Simon Lalong became the Senate candidate.
