10th NASS: Lawmaker Accused of Murder, Alhassan Doguwa Enters Speakership Race
- The race for the 10th National Assembly Speakership position of the House Representatives has reached a zenith
- A murder-accused lawmaker, Hon Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has also joined the race and become the 11th entrant in the speakership race
- Doguwa made this known recently in a letter sent to newly elected lower chamber members
FCT, Abuja - A lawmaker accused of murder, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has entered the speakership race for the 10th National Assembly.
As reported by Daily Trust, Doguwa's intention was confirmed in a letter sent to the members-elect.
Doguwa, who represents Doguwa /Tudun Wada Federal Constituency of Kano State, said his passion for nation-building fuelled the desire to aspire to the position.
As contained in the letter, Doguwa said:
“I am delighted to congratulate you on your election to the 10th Nigerian National Assembly.
”I want to use this opportunity to communicate my desire to contest for the office of the Speaker of the House. My passion for nation-building has fueled my desire to seek this office."
Following the development, Doguwa will become the 11th entrant in the race for the speakership position of the green chamber at the House of Representatives.
Recall that Legit.ng earlier reported that Doguwa was remanded in prison by a magistrates court in Kano on Wednesday, March 1, for allegations bordering on murder and electoral violence.
Earlier reports confirmed that the police arrested Doguwa concerning a suspected case of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, etc., during the just concluded 2023 presidential election.
His case is still in court as he is due for trial in the coming months, where he will defend all charges against him.
On the speakership scene, Doguwa will slug it with other prolific lawmakers like Deputy Speaker Idris Wase (APC, Plateau), Ben Kalu (APC, Abia), Muktar Betara (APC, Borno), Sada Soli (APC, Katsina), Tunji Olawuyi (APC, Kwara) and Abubakar Makki (APC, Jigawa).
Others are Yusuf Gagdi (APC, Plateau), Tajudeen Abbas (APC, Kaduna), Aminu Jaji (APC, Zamfara), and Miriam Onuoha (APC, Imo), Premium Times reported.

Meanwhile, lawmakers of the 10th House of Representatives have been urged to ensure they vote for Aliyu Betara as speaker.
The call was made to the elected members of the House of Representatives by a coalition of Bola Tinubu support groups.
The groups said Betara, while serving as the chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, exhibited the qualities needed to be the speaker of the 10th National Assembly.
