Okene, Kogi - No less than 3 persons have been killed in an explosion that erupted in the Okene area of Kogi state on Thursday morning, December 29.
According to Channels Television, the explosion happened around Oyinoyi's Palace in the Okene local government area of the state.

The incident happened a few hours before President Muhammadu Buhari is scheduled to commission some projects in the state.

Okene is the hometown of Governor Yahaya Bello and the headquarters of the Kogi central senatorial district.
However, there has been controversy about the explosion. Some residents have associated it with a bomb blast, and others have said it emanated from a transformer.

It was reported that Governor Yahaya Bello had been in Okene since Wednesday, December 28, waiting for the first visit of President Buhari to the state since he became the governor on January 27, 2016.
From the reported schedule, President Buhari is expected to land in Okene, where he is expected to hold a town hall meeting and commission some projects in the senatorial district.
The President, will from there, move to Lokoja, the state capital to commission other laudable projects in the state.
Neither the police nor the state government is yet to make an official statement about the incident.

Bello, who is also the national youths co-ordinator of the Tinubu-Shettima presidential campaign council, stated that President Muhammadu Buhari did not rejig the agency on resumption to office.
The APC governor spoke on the background of recent statistics of unemployment, mass migration of medical practitioners, and Nigeria's debt, adding that there are saboteurs in Buhari's administration.
