Atiku, while addressing many Hausa and Fulani extractions of Nigerians, told the Arewa public that they don't need an Igbo or a Yoruba as president but "someone from the north."

Is Atiku Abubakar's comment tribalistic?

2023: Atiku Abubakar says Arewa needs a pan-Nigerian leader

The PDP flagbearers urged the northerners to trust him with their votes, stating that he is the most qualified candidate to be the president after Buhari.

Atiku says he is the one the northerners need

“I have traversed the whole of this country,” he said.
“I know the whole of this country. I have built bridges across this country. I think what the average northerner needs is somebody who is from the north, and who also understands the other parts of Nigeria and who has been able to build bridges across the rest of the country.
“This is what the northerner needs. He (northerner) doesn’t need a Yoruba candidate, or an Igbo candidate. This is what the northerner needs.
“I stand before you as a pan-Nigerian of northern origin.”

The largest opposition, which is supposed to have built on the weakness of President Muhammadu Buhari's administration on security and inflation, decided to present a northern candidate against the nationalistic view.

The party had claimed that the south enjoyed more power than the north in its 16 years of rule, but nationalistically, many southerners believe power should not stay in the north after 8 years of Buhari.
