FCT, Abuja - Senator Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano state has formally finalised his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), AIT News reported.
It will be recalled that Legit.ng reported that the Kano state elder statesman had in August announced his defection after having a fallout with the presidential candidate of the NNPP, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.
His defection was read out by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan during plenary on Wednesday, September 21 at the red chamber of the upper echelon of the national assembly.
While giving his reason for switching camps in the letter read out by the Senate president, Shekarau said his decision was based on the premise of fulfilling his political duties in a more ideologically inclined party.

PDP welcomes Shekarau
The Kano Central senator received a warm welcome at the red chamber by the minority leader, Senator Philip Aduda alongside other members of the house of the senate in the PDP block.
Shekarau is also likely to join up with the presidential campaign council of Atiku Abubakar and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa ahead of campaign activities coming up in a matter of days.
This further puts PDP in pole position to contest for massive votes in Kano despite being in the grip of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).
2023 election: NNPP candidates switch camps, declare for Tinubu
Meanwhile, four NNPP candidates for National Assembly elections in Osun state have declared support for Tinubu ahead of the 2023 elections.
The candidates said they decided to back Tinubu instead of the NNPP presidential candidate, Kwankwaso, due to a lack of transparency in the running of their party at the national level.
Clement Bamigbola, Osun Central Senatorial candidate of the NNPP, spoke on behalf of the other three.
