Three Major Reasons Why APC Won Ekiti Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has finally declared Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress winner of the 2022 Ekiti governorship election.

Oyebanji polled a total of 187,057 votes to defeat his two closest challengers – Segun Oni of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Bisi Kolawole of the People’s Democratic Party.

The SDP emerged in second place with total votes of 82,211 while the PDP was third with 67,457 votes.

However, this victory might not have been possible if not for some reasons. The reasons are have been identified as follows.

1. The emergence of SDP from PDP

One of the biggest gains for the ruling APC was the balkanisation of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party. 2. The Fayemi factor

Being the incumbent governor, Fayemi was instrumental in the victory of the APC in this election. Apart from the fact that Oyebanji was his candidate, Fayemi had the luxury of doing everything possible to make him win.

3. Massive vote buying

Another deciding factor was the use of vote buying. The just concluded governorship election was heavily monetised. Party agents engaged in blatant vote buying. the ruling APC was one of the chief actors of vote buying. This helps in the just secured victory.

Meanwhile, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concludes the Ekiti state governorship election, the results so far show a three-horse race between the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Data from the electoral umpire suggest that the state has a total of 988,923 registered voters.

The election took place in 2,445 polling units across 177 registration areas in 16 local government areas of the state. Sixteen political parties are represented in the Ekiti governorship contest.
