2023 Presidency: APC May Disqualify Amaechi, Ngige, Others
- All Progressives Congress aspirants like minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and Chris Ngige may be disqualified
- This is as a result of the recently signed new Electoral Act which mandates all political appointees seeking elective office to resign ahead of any party primary
- Meanwhile, the ruling party is reportedly awaiting the judgment of the Court of Appeal and even the Supreme Court on the issue
If care is not taken, top All Progressives Congress political appointees contesting the 2023 elections who have not resigned their appointments might be disqualified.
It is believed that the ruling party would not risk being disqualified by fielding political appointees in contravention of Section 84 (12), Punch Newspaper reports.
Political appointees who have signified their interest to contest the presidency on the platform of the APC included the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and his counterpart for Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige.

Section 84 (12) of the new Electoral Act mandates all political appointees seeking elective office to resign ahead of any party primary they plan to participate in. This has however been challenged in the court by a lawyer, Nduka Edede.

Justice Evelyn Anyadike subsequently ruled that the section was “unconstitutional, invalid, illegal, null, void and of no effect whatsoever” and asked Malami to delete the section.
The National Assembly and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party had however appealed the judgment.
According to a top member of the APC National Working Committee, the ruling party is awaiting the judgment of the Court of Appeal and even the Supreme Court on the controversial clause.
He was quoted to have said:
“If the court upholds Section 84, the affected minister will be disqualified. But if the court deletes the section, they can contest without resigning. However, my advice to them is to resign, if they don’t want to be disqualified.”

Meanwhile, Pa Ayo Adebanjo has lambasted former president Goodluck Jonathan for mulling the idea of contesting the presidency in the 2023.
The leader of Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere is one the people insisting that the presidency should be micro zoned to the southeast for equity, justice and fairness in 2023.
According to the elder statesman, there was a need for aspirants from the South, especially from the southeast to be united.
