Buhari’s Senator Dumps APC, Defects to PDP in Katsina, Gives Reason

Katsina state - Ahmed Babba Kaita, the senator representing Katsina North senatorial district, the senatorial zone of President Muhammadu Buhari, has dumped the All Progressives Congress APC for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Babba-Kaita officially announced his defection to the PDP on Wednesday, April 20, Premium Times reported.

The newspaper noted that the defection brought an end to speculations on local radio stations in Katsina and on social media that the senator would be leaving the APC ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Why I left APC for PDP, Babba-Kaita reveals

Babba-Kaita in a statement released by his media aide, Abdulkadir Lawal, said he defected because he is not a bandwagon politician.

He also said the PDP represents what he stands for.

The statement read:

“Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita is not a bandwagon politician. His exemplary and robust representation in the Nigerian Senate is to the admiration of all, and with significant, visible impacts in the areas of infrastructural and human capital development across the three Senatorial zones of the state. There is room to do more.
“The fresh page from the decision to join the Peoples’ Democratic Party represents the ideals of representativeness in the mandate, goodwill and an even more determined desire and opportunity to provide succour, comfort and the much-needed dividends of democracy to the people."

The senator also accused Aminu Masari, the governor of Katsina state, of not conducting local government elections for more than six years.

He said the governor disregarded other stakeholders, disobeyed the foundation of democracy, and hated a level playing ground in party activities.

The senator has been at loggerheads with the governor.

2023: Former governorship aspirant dumps APC, defects to PDP in Oyo state

In a related development, a former governorship aspirants in the APC in Oyo state, Mogaji Joseph Tegbe, has defected to the PDP.

This development came on the heels of the continued crisis within the APC which has claimed its first casualty.

Tegbe's defection was reportedly perfected late Tuesday night, April 12, after months of intense pressure.
