Giving People Bags of Rice Isn’t Empowerment, Owodiong Tells Nigerians

In what will annoy some Nigerians, a 2023 governorship aspirant in Akwa Ibom state, Obong Ide Owodiong, has rubbished the act of distributing rice and food stuffs to people.

The governorship aspirant explained that distributing bags of rice and cash was not all there is to empowerment, Punch Newspaper reports.

He reportedly made this known during an interview with newsmen in his country home, Ibesikpo Asutan, Akwa Ibom state, on Sunday, December 12.

“People think empowerment is about giving people bags of rice; no, but to liberate the minds. When your mind is liberated, your eyes can then open to know how you can be empowered. I want to build on the legacy of previous leaders like Obong Victor Attah, Akpabio, Udom Emmanuel and see how we can put a new social contract for the people”.

Going further, Owodiong expressed disappointment that many African leaders do not have an interest in leaving behind legacies.

He said great African leaders like Nelson Mandela of South Africa, and others were firm because they stood out for what they believed in.

In another report, Akwa Ibom governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel has assured Akwa Ibomites that the Ibom Deep Seaport project when operational will transform the state into a transhipment city that will provide thousands of direct jobs to citizens.

The governor made the comment through the state's commissioner for economic development and Ibom Deep Seaport, Mr Akan Okon. He said Busan Port Authority, BPA, operators of the world's second-largest and busiest port in South Korea, has agreed to provide the technical support towards the construction of Ibom Deep Seaport.

The commissioner also added that the Korean Maritime and Ocean University have also agreed to partner the Akwa Ibom state government in manpower development so as to train the pool of manpower that will be needed for the Ibom Deep Seaport project.

Mr. Akan was briefing newsmen at the Victor Attah International Airport shortly after his arrival from an official visit to South Korea on Friday, December 3.

FG gives final approval on Ibom Deep Seaport

Legit.ng had earlier reported that the Akwa Ibom state government recently secured the final approval for the commencement of the project.

The approval of the project was endorsed by the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday, December 16, 2020.

It signalled the completion of a series of approvals for the prime A¹ project which has outlasted two previous administrations.
