2023: Prominent Northern Group Faults Shettima Over Comment on Igbo Presidency

  • Ahead of the 2023 general elections, northern youths have reacted to the comment of Alhaji Yerima Shettima regarding Igbo presidency
  • The Youths have expressed deep concern over Shettima’s comment while noting it is void of empathy and reason
  • Meanwhile, the group stated further that Shettima's statement does in no way represent their position on power shift

Kaduna state- The leader, ship of Arewa Concerned Civil Society Organisations of Nigerian (ACCSON) has tackled the president of the Arewa consultative Forum, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, following a statement credited to him that it is too late for the 2023 presidency to be zoned to the Southeastern part of the country.

ACCSON expressed their disappointment over Shettima’s comment on Saturday, December 11, in a statement signed by the group’s spokesperson, Comrade Abdulsalam Moh’d Kazeem, Daily Trust reports.

It described Shettima’s statement as reckless and devoid of reason, empathy and fairness, saying:

“We strongly believe that no genuine democrat with sincere national interest and who cherishes the spirit of unity and corporate existence of Nigeria will utter such insensitive comments at this critical political time in our country.”

He added:

“For the sake of the records and for posterity, the said statement by Alhaji Yerima Shettima does not, in any way, represent the recent position of our umbrella youth coalition, the Arewa Concerned Civil Society Organizations of Nigeria (ACCSON), that the Presidency of Nigeria in 2023 should be specifically zoned to the South-East geopolitical zone, in the interest of political equity and fairness.”

There have been calls from prominent Nigerians from the Southeast geopolitical zone for the presidency to be zoned to the area in 2023.

They are of the opinion that the region had been marginalised for too long, leading to the emergence of separatist groups.

2023: Northern group urges Orji Uzor Kalu to run for president

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that a group from the northeast region - Uzor Kalu Support Group (UKSUG) has urged the Chief Whip of the Senate and former governor of Abia state, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu to run for the 2023 presidential election.

The group said Senator Kalu has wide contacts and acceptance across the country to run for the 2023 presidency.

The coordinator of UKSUG in the northeast, Alhaji Mohammed Yusuf Ajiji who said this in a statement seen by Legit.ng.

In other news, a member of the Osinbajo for President group, Salihu Nataro, has said that the north is making a substantive effort to position Nigeria's vice president, Yemi Osinbajo for president come 2023.

It was reported that Nataro said there is a need to revolutionise Nigeria's education and economic sector in tune with the sustainable development goals.
