With men taking the centre stage in politics across the Nigerian ecosystem, the Akwa Ibom state governor Emmanuel Udom has taken a bold step to call for a turnaround in the nation's political terrain.
Udom called for increased participation of women and youths in politics with a view to driving desired change and sustainable development in the system.
The governor while speaking at the closing of the two-day retreat organised by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) attended by Legit.ng said there is a need for a structural process that would create a better opportunity for increased women participation in politics and governance.
The retreat themed, “Rescue and Rebuild Nigeria” took place at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja.

Continuing, the governor insisted that women and youths must be given the opportunity to explore their full potentials within the party and in government.
Further describing women and youths as the powerhouse of electioneering activities, Udom said the economic and social development of any society is highly dependant on the involvement of these populations in the decision-making process.
Udom said:
“Youths and women are the real powerhouses of our electioneering activities; they are also the real drivers of our economic and social development as a country. So, they are critical stakeholders in nation-building."
“If we desire to move forward as a nation and a political party, we must therefore immediately set up processes and structured modalities that will engender their greater participation at the forefront in politics and governance."
He charged the women and youths in the party to position themselves to take up key political roles within the PDP, as the party prepares for government positions at the various levels across the country come 2023.
Governor Udom commends organisers of PDP retreat
The governor commended the organizers of the retreat and urged the National Working Committee (NWC)-elect to get ready to build on the solid structures already laid by the outgoing leadership of the party.
Recall that the PDP had recently hailed Governor Udom on his Maintain Peace Movement programme, with which he has fostered peace, inclusiveness and development in his state.
The programme which the PDP recommended for implementation at the national level of governance embodies templates that allowed the Akwa-Ibom state government to create an enabling atmosphere for greater citizens’ participation, effectively manage contending interests, achieve harmony among the political class and harmonious living in a multifarious state.
PDP governors urge Nigerians to vote out APC in 2023
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that governors within the PDP had called on Nigerians to ensure that the ruling All Progressives Congress is voted out in the 2023 general election.
The governor said it has become clear that Nigeria as a country cannot survive another four years under the leadership of the APC.
The warning was given by the governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Only PDP governors are the ones working across Nigeria
Also, a former vice president of the country and PDP presidential candidate for the 2019 general election, Atiku Abubakar, has said that PDP governors are the only ones working effectively across the country.
Atiku accused the governors under the APC of non-performance alleging that while PDP governors are working, their counterparts in the APC are sleeping.
He said that PDP governors are always commissioning projects while nothing is happening in APC-controlled states.
