Anambra Governorship Election: 4 Things We Noticed at the PDP Grand Rally in Awka

Awka - The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held a grand rally in Awka, the Anambra state capital on Tuesday, November 2 to officially end its campaign for its governorship candidate, Valentine Ozigbo in the forthcoming election on Saturday, November 6.

A Legit.ng attended the event at the Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka as thousands of PDP faithful in the state attended the mega rally.

1. Peter Obi is still very popular in Anambra state

Shouts of 'Okuwte Ndi Igbo' rented the air as Peter Obi stepped into the arena. The former governor of Anambra remains a popular figure in the state and the people respect him so much for providing good governance and unrivaled leadership while he held sway in Agu Awka, the state's seat of power.

2. Valentine Ozigbo is popular among the youths

80% of those who thronged into the arena were young people in Anambra state. It was a testament to the popularity of Ozigbo among the youths in the state.Various youth and student organisations were represented at the rally while young people who were not mobilised with any financial officer came to the arena on their accord to support the 51-year old candidate.

3. The PDP family in Anambra is united

Despite the pockets of opposition within the party in the weeks leading up to its controversial primaries, the PDP in Anambra state seems to be united considering the number of big wigs of the party who attended the grand rally. Elder statesmen like Senator Ben Obi and Professor ABC Nwosu were on hand to offer their support to the party's candidate ahead of the election.

4. Ndi Anambra are yearning for a new kid on the block

Ozigbo's selling point is that he is a new kid on the block in Anambra politics. Also, he has no baggage, unlike his fellow contestants. A new face in Anambra politics is strange and it seems the people are enjoying the breath of fresh air. Most of the people in the arena spoken to by Legit.ng, kept emphasizing the fact that Ozigbo is not one of the regular politicians they are used to.

Like Peter Obi, Like Valentine Ozigbo

Ozigbo has said he is in the race to make Anambra better again, like when Peter Obi presided over the state.

He made the declaration while addressing thousands of his enthusiastic supporters at the arena.

He said the current government of Willie Obiano in Anambra has taken the state backward since Obi, a former vice presidential candidate of the PDP left power.

Okowa canvasses support for Ozigbo at Awka rally

Legit.ng had earlier reported that at the rally, Delta state governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, called on the people of Anambra to close ranks and take back the state in line with the PDP "rescue mission" for the country.

Okowa, who is deputy chairman of the PDP national campaign council for the Anambra governorship election, gave the charge at the packed arena.

He said that the gubernatorial poll was special for the youths of Anambra and urged them to come out in their numbers to vote for Ozigbo.
