Anambra Election: US Issues Strong Statement Ahead of Poll

Just three days to the long-awaited Anambra governorship election, the United States of America has said that the government would be watching the activities surrounding the poll very closely.

A statement by the US government on Wednesday, November 3, said it looks forward to a peaceful and transparent gubernatorial election in Anambra State on November 6.

The US also said that it is expecting that the results from the polls on Saturday, November 6, would be one that accurately reflects the will of the state’s residents.

The statement said:

"We will be paying close attention to actions of individuals who interfere with the democratic process or instigate violence against civilian populations before, during, or after the elections."

Visa restriction for those responsible for violence and their family members

According to the US government, it would not hesitate to consider consequences - including visa restrictions - for those found to be responsible for election-related violence or undermining the democratic process.

It said:

"Under U.S. immigration law, certain violations also may lead to restrictions on family members. We call on citizens, electoral officials, party members, and security force personnel to do their part in ensuring a credible and secure electoral process."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Delta state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will start on its mission to rescue Nigeria from Anambra.

Okowa also warned the people of Anambra state that a political revolution is going to happen in the state and in Nigeria as a whole.

He also said the Anambra election is an opportunity for Ndi Anambra to join the PDP on its moving train.

The governor said the gubernatorial poll was special for the youths of Anambra and urged them to come out in their numbers to vote for the PDP candidate, Valentine Ozigbo.

Okowa further called on party leaders and stakeholders to forgive one another and stay united to win the election.

Nine Anambra governorship candidates call for Nnamdi Kanu's release

In other news, nine governorship candidates contesting for the November 6, election have called for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The candidates made the call in a joint statement signed and released to the press on Wednesday, November 3.
