On May 8, Boyce approached Amber Beraun while she was retrieving her mail and inquired if she lived in the house behind her.

Beraun informed him that there were no valuable possessions inside, but she offered him approximately $100 (N76,000) in cash, which she had received as tips at work and kept in her car.

After taking the money, the man compelled Beraun to add him as a friend on Facebook, as relayed by the police.

The affidavit further alleges that he invited her to "come chill" with him, based on transcripts obtained from Facebook.

In response, Beraun stated that she was already in a relationship and could not meet with him.

Initially, she did not report the incident but was encouraged to do so by her boyfriend.

Subsequently, in an unrelated case, Boyce was apprehended in June for allegedly shooting two individuals and assaulting another with a brick.
