The UK Home Office published an updated version of its Skilled Worker visa caseworker guidance, detailing how salary is used to determine whether foreign nationals qualify to live and work in Britain.
The guidance, now at version 20.0, is used by UK Visas and Immigration caseworkers to assess applications from both EEA and non-EEA nationals seeking sponsored employment in the country.

Among the eligibility criteria, salary carries significant weight as part of the tradeable points system.
How the Points System Works
To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa, an applicant must score a total of 70 points. Of these, 50 are mandatory points awarded for having a licensed sponsor, working in a job at the appropriate skill level, and demonstrating English language ability.
The remaining 20 points are tradeable, and salary is a central component of how those points are earned.
The guidance sets out that salary considerations apply across all tradeable points options, governed specifically by immigration rules SW 14.1 to SW 14.5.
This means that regardless of which tradeable points route an applicant takes, their salary will be assessed and must meet the relevant threshold to contribute towards the required 20 points.
What Caseworkers Check
Caseworkers reviewing applications are required to assess whether the salary declared on the applicant's Certificate of Sponsorship meets the minimum requirements tied to the specific occupation.
The guidance also references the Immigration Salary List, a separate appendix that sets out occupation-specific salary floors for roles included on that list.
The rules further make provision for certain categories of applicants, including new entrants to the workforce and those with relevant PhD qualifications, who may be eligible for lower salary thresholds while still meeting the points requirement.
Applications that fail to meet the salary component of the tradeable points requirement must be refused, according to the guidance.
Caseworkers are instructed to explain clearly in any refusal decision which points were not awarded and why.
The updated guidance is published on the UK government's official website and is intended for internal Home Office use, though it is publicly accessible.
