Teacher Fabian from Meru County is a beacon of hope not only to his students from the St Pius X Seminary Secondary School in Nkubu but also to the thousands of fans he has been gaining online.
He is not just any ordinary teacher, as by day, he imparts knowledge and ignites young minds as a high school Chemistry and Biology teacher, while by night, he assumes the role of a vigilant protector, serving as a watchman.
When TUKO.co.ke caught up with him for an interview, Fabian was all smiles as our discussion swept him to the early 2000s when he dropped out of school due to a lack of school fees.
By then, his life seemed over, but unbeknownst to him, the delay in his education was just an exciting twist that fate had added to his story.
"In 2001, I had to drop out of school, and I came to Nairobi to hustle as a young man doing manual jobs. In 2009, I joined a security company which is based in Nairobi but I was posted in Meru," he recalls.
In 2014, after nearly five years of working as a night security guard, Fabian decided to go back to high school and complete his education.
"In 2016, I registered as a private candidate for KCSE. In 2017, I then proceeded to Meru University for my Bachelor in Education Science. I graduated in 2022," he said.
All this while, Fabian was balancing his studies and also his night security guard job, whose earnings he used to pay for his education.
Becoming a Chemistry and Biology teacher in Meru
After graduating in 2022, Fabian began looking for a job and, fortunately, landed one at the St Pius X Seminary Secondary School in Nkubu.
"In fact, I was given the examinations department after I was hired and after three months in the school, I was also given the science department in the school, and I am happy to say a great improvement has been noted since I began working in the science department," he said with a touch of joy and pride.
When he was first hired, the teacher did not disclose to the school management or students that he was also moonlighting as a watchman at night.
However, he decided to let the cat out of the bag after realising that his story inspired his students and that there was nothing to be ashamed of.
"I decided to share my story with the students to motivate them. The administration was pleased when I shared because the students took it very positively," Fabian said.
The chemistry teacher said the students take their studies seriously, and with his story, he showed them how seriously they should be taking life.
He has also taught and inspired them to respect security guards, as most face challenges they cannot disclose to outsiders.
"Sometimes, I wear my watchman uniform to class to motivate the students. When I teach, I hilariously challenge them that they cannot fail to know Chemistry, yet a security guard is teaching them," he comically stated.
Apart from working as a teacher and security guard, Fabian also motivates students all around the country in various workshops.
