An unidentified Rivers state fisherman has caught a giant sea creature.
NigerDelta Insider shared pictures of the massive catch on Facebook alongside the jubilant fisherman.
According to the media outlet, the big catch is a manatee, named Asanima in the local dialect, and was done by the man who hails from Ogbolobolo community in Ahoada West LGA, Rivers State.
It was reported that the fisherman was celebrated by people in his community for the catch.
As seen in the pictures shared, the fisherman sat on the manatee with a soft drink in hand while people gathered around him.
Legit.ng messaged NigerDelta Insider in a bid to verify its source but the media outlet is yet to respond as of the time of this report.
What is a manatee?
According to National Geographic, manatees are large, slow-moving animals that frequent coastal waters and rivers. These attributes make them vulnerable to hunters seeking their hides, oil, and bones.
Manatee numbers declined throughout the last century, mostly because of hunting pressure.
Expert shares why a manatee was found in Rivers
Reacting to the massive catch, Okehi Tobechukwu Emmanuel, the CEO of Gaspar Farms, said the manatee is an endangered species that needs to be protected.

According to him, it is rare for such to be seen in such an area and attributed its appearance to the sea creature finding the place habitable. In his words:
"It is rare to be seen but I think the manatee commonly referred to as the sea cow is an endangered species that needs to be protected.
"For it to be found, that means it has been inhabiting in the river for quite a long time now as it has found its food which is sea grass and there is no disturbance of boat and ship in the river."
Tobechuwu called on the government to conserve the river in which the manatee was found in
"I think the government should make an effort to conserve the river in which the sea cow was found because the river is healthy for the manatee to habit in.

Man catches giant fish
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a lucky man also caught a giant fish.
In a TikTok clip that has amassed over two million views, the lucky man walked with the massive fish on his shoulders.
People watched curiously as he walked past them like a victor from the war front. He got to a point and dropped the giant fish on the ground.
Its length left netizens stunned. People wondered how the catch was made, as some others argued that it must be an expensive fish.
