The city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) rapidly rose from a small fishing village on the edge of the desert to one of the fastest-growing cities globally.

Dubai is now a global business hub with many international companies locating businesses in the city.

The transformation of Dubai, a top luxury tourist destination, started after oil was discovered around 50 years ago.

Proceeds from the oil gave rise to the thriving metropolis, making Dubai the most populous city in the UAE.

The city, known for its grandeur, holds more than 100 Guinness World Records. Here is a list of some of the most spectacular records:

1. Tallest building

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai holds the record for the tallest building globally, standing at 830 metres.

It is the prominent landmark in Dubai and holds several world records, including the highest residential apartments, most floors in a building and tallest man-made structure on land ever.

The building’s façade is made up of over 24,000 glass panels, and it takes three months to clean them.

2. Tallest hotel

In 2018, the 356-meter Gevora Hotel in Dubai became the tallest hotel in the world, complete with certification as a Guinness World Record holder.

It narrowly beat the JW Marriott Marquis hotel, also in Dubai, which stands at 355.35 metres from ground level to the top of its mast.

3. Deepest pool

Deep Dive Dubai, located in the Nad Al Sheba neighbourhood, is the world's deepest swimming pool, at a depth of 60.02 meters.

The pool, which holds 14 million litres of water, has an underwater city for divers to explore. The pool also comes with state-of-the-art lighting and sound system.

4. Biggest mall

Located next to the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall is the world’s largest shopping, entertainment, and leisure destination.

The mall features over 1,200 retail stores and covers more than 1 million square metres. In addition, the mall features an ATM that spits out pure gold nuggets and coins.

5. Largest water fountain

The Palm Fountain in Dubai holds the record for the world’s largest fountain. The water fountain, designed to show the harmony between the universe and the earth, set the record on October 22, 2020.

The change of colour and brightness is combined with the dancing, jumping and bursting of the water combined with music.

Architectural wonder

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that an architectural piece of greatness got people talking on social media with the way it looks so postmodern and entirely different from the norm.
