The year is ending on a high note for Licette Otekho who just moved into her magnificent four-bedroom house.
It is a dream that was borne more than 10 years ago when Licette and her husband bought a plot.
For years, it looked like a white elephant project as someone built on the road leading to their plot until a good neighbour offered them a replacement in exchange for theirs.

Rollercoaster journey
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke's Hillary Lisimba, Licette revealed that construction began in earnest in May 2019, setting in motion a rollercoaster kind of journey that was tough but which they didn't want to quit.

To keep the expenditure in check, the couple sat down with their architect and drew the house together on paper, essentially working together to make the project successful.
She disclosed:
"I also bought the materials myself, never sent a fundi or anyone to purchase anything for me. I also walked to different stores comparing prices of stuff and quality before making purchases."
She also revealed that they did not have a budget, they just did things step by step with the money they had saved plus salaries.
Lessons learnt
It is an experience that has instilled a number of lessons in her, the first being to start small, focus, and trust in God.
She added that it is also prudent to monitor the progress of the work while leaving God to do the rest.
In her words:
"Any middle class person can own a home. It doesn't have to be huge. No house is too small for a human being. A little sacrifice and savings can take you a long way."
Interestingly, as magnificent and appealing as the house looks, Licette still believes that there are a lot of things she would change or would have done differently.
It is possible
Having been there and done that, the clinical anaesthetist has come to believe that it is possible and one does not need millions to start.
She, therefore, prevails upon those who are yet to own houses to save what they can and start.
"Don't keep money in the bank for too long, do it in steps. A journey of a thousand miles starts with one step," she said.
